CATAVILLA is a cultural fashion project by Yuko Nagaoka, a Japanese graphic designer based in Berlin. The project was born from a quiet frustration: after moving to London, she found herself hesitating to wear her vintage kimono and haori. The old silk was too delicate and difficult to care for outside Japan. What once felt natural became an act of caution.She wanted to reclaim that ease—to preserve the spirit of the Japanese kimono while allowing it to live naturally in contemporary life abroad. CATAVILLA reinterprets the kimono by combining its traditional form with the structure of Western tailored coats. The result: robes designed to be worn, lived in, and enjoyed everyday.The name comes from katabira, an old Japanese word for a single-layer kimono. Lightness. Simplicity. These ideas lie at the heart of the project—timeless design shaped by material, structure, and everyday use, rather than seasonal fashion cycles.

Soak the fabric overnight to prevent washing shrinkage and check for colour bleeding.

Dry the fabric, iron it, and check for large linen slubs.
